BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Peoria bar owner Julie Walgenbach is being sued for allegedly playing four unlicensed songs at Martini’s on Water Street, one of 15 venues targeted by ASCAP, which claims it attempted contact for several years. The organization seeks statutory damages of $750 to $30,000 per song plus attorney’s fees. WMBD
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Cincinnati Insurance Company sued two former WTVP staff members in Peoria County Court last week to recover $250,000 paid on a fraud claim—alleging misuse of company cards and fake papers that caused losses of about $375,000—with a court meeting set for Aug. 22. WCBU
- ➤ Two 17-year-olds charged with first degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting at Wood Sage Apartments remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center pending trial—charges brought following the death of 22-year-old Clay Megan last November. WMBD
- ➤ The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help after a female body was found in the Illinois River Monday near a business on Cargill Road, and Pekin Fire Department used a boat & other agencies joined the investigation to identify her and learn the cause of death. WMBD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, Washington City Council heard funding pitches from the Washington Chamber of Commerce and Discover Peoria— the chamber asked for $35,000 with an extra $10,000 for bicentennial events while Discover Peoria requested to raise its contract from $20,000 to $25,000 for the next fiscal year. Other council updates included the city issuing a certificate of occupancy to Tangled Roots for its new restaurant along with new building permits, a tourism grant for a disc golf tournament, and low bids approved for street and tree maintenance—efforts that support local services.
