- ➤ Peoria’s new CJ Harvest grocery store will open this summer after Chuck Brown renovated the old Save-A-Lot building on Western Avenue—he invested his own money and received over $2 million in state—city funds to create a full-service market with fresh produce, a meat department, a bakery, delivery and rides for senior citizens. - ➤ A Peoria man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday in Peoria County Court for the New Year’s Day 2022 shooting death of Bridget Ross—adding 30 years to the 69-year sentence he received in July 2023 for killing Daniella Jackson so he will serve a total of 99 years in prison. - ➤ Peoria Police arrested 24-year-old Shaquille Brown Tuesday around 11:15 a.m. after reports of trouble with a man possibly armed with a gun on Lucerne Court and Melcosta Drive and later locating him near Molleck Drive and Forrest Hill Avenue with a stolen firearm, and he now faces charges including aggravated assault, armed violence, possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, and having no FOID card before being taken to Peoria County Jail. - ➤ Peoria Police were called Tuesday afternoon to a hospital after a 36-year-old man arrived with a gunshot wound from a verbal altercation on the 300 block of Wayne Street when another man pulled a gun — his injuries were not serious and the suspect was not found while the investigation remains open. - ➤ The National Weather Service warned of localized flooding in parts of central and southern Illinois as heavy storms are expected today and Saturday—rainfall may reach 4–6 inches in some areas. - ➤ The Peoria County Emergency Management Agency reminded residents to listen for outdoor warning sirens during spring storm season since they signal dangers like tornadoes or severe winds. Officials explained a long, steady wail means an imminent threat—prompting anyone outdoors to seek shelter, and tests occur every Tuesday at 10 a.m. WCBU
- ➤ Incumbent Peoria City Council members won strong results on April 3 as Denis Cyr and Denise Jackson secured decisive wins and Tim Riggenbach ran unopposed while incumbent Andre Allen in District 4 held a narrow 79-vote lead. The District 2 race may see a new face with Alex Carmona leading Estrella Diaz and final results to be certified on April 15 (mail-in ballots are still being counted). WCBU
