COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Peoria Department of Public Works will hold free mulch giveaways on Saturday, April 19 and Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Works Facility at 3505 N. Dries Lane—Peoria and Peoria County residents may take unlimited mulch on a first-come, first-served basis—with staff available to help load vehicles.  City of Peoria

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • East Peoria firefighters responded to a garage fire on Kentucky Court Thursday around 2:30 p.m.—rescuing an uninjured cat and containing the flames, with damage estimated at $2,500 as the cause remains under investigation.  WMBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After voters in Washington District 52 narrowly rejected a $20 million plan two years ago, they approved a $23 million referendum on April 4 with a vote of 1,438 to 872. The new Lincoln Grade School will be built as a 65,000 square foot facility expected to serve about 400 students for the 2027 to 28 school year—while the outdated 1949 building at 303 Jackson St. may be sold or demolished—causing taxes to rise by about $25 a month for a $200,000 home.  WCBU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning at 7:00 a.m. Monday, April 7, work will start on W Garden Street from S Laramie Street to S Ligonier Street on the 61605 Zip Code Sidewalk and ADA Ramps Improvement Project—students walking to Manual High School will see improved connectivity, and pedestrians should use caution as some sidewalks will be closed—this project is funded by a $2 million HUD grant secured by former U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos.  City of Peoria
  • The East Peoria City Council approved a ban on pedestrians standing or gathering at 10 intersections to ease traffic safety risks—city officials noted that drivers may swerve to avoid accidents on busy streets.  WMBD
  • Peoria and Peoria County will settle a lawsuit with the Heidelberg family by finalizing a $1.25 million agreement over a case where a man spent 47 years in prison—a city council vote on the $625,000 share is set for Tuesday while the county board decides on its portion on Thursday.  WCBU
  • USPS began implementing nationwide service changes on April 1 — with some deliveries faster and others slower — and will launch phase two on July 1 to improve efficiency and transparency. In Illinois, these adjustments will affect First-Class Mail, periodicals, marketing mail, package services and other products while the agency expects to save $36 billion over 10 years.  Pekin Daily Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frito-Lay issued a recall on March 26 for less than 1,300 bags of 13 oz Tostitos chips that have a Guaranteed Fresh date of May 20 and may contain undeclared milk that could cause a serious allergic reaction. The recalled chips were distributed to retailers across 13 states including Illinois and consumers are advised to return the product for a full refund or discard it safely.  Pekin Daily Times
  • Walker’s Wine Juice LLC announced on April 1 that it is recalling its pumpkin juice products in Illinois because they may be contaminated with botulism from a high pH level during processing. The recall covers 2.5-gallon boxed bags, 5-gallon hot packs and 30-, 60- and 275-gallon bulk containers — consumers should check for these items and return them for a refund.  Pekin Daily Times
  • OSF Healthcare Children’s Hospital now uses seven mobile sensory carts to help neurodivergent kids feel less stressed during care. The carts—made possible by a donation from Chuck Thomas’ family—use gentle lights, a bubble column and projection screens in patient rooms, the emergency department and surgical prep areas.  25 News Now
