Good morning, Peoria. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peoria Park District began building a free splash pad at Lakeview Park that will include a shelter — swings — and restrooms to replace the old aquatic center. The project, delayed by weather and permits, is expected to finish by mid-summer.  Peoria Journal Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Neighborhood House reported its 2006 Ford Econoline E-350 (license plate 29038CV) was stolen around 5 a.m. today, forcing the nonprofit to rent a van for field trips that normally serve about 30 kids and raising concerns for future trips during peak summer and fall seasons.  25 News Now
  • Police arrested 33-year-old Ishmiel Gates Friday morning after he allegedly kicked in the door of a Peoria home, stole a vehicle, led officers on a chase, crashed into a home, and fled on foot until he was caught near the Gale WB ramp of I-74 — no one in the home was injured and he was taken to Peoria County Jail.  WMBD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Chris Setti returned from a 2-and-a-half day trade mission to Mexico led by Gov. Pritzker and said meetings with Mexican business, agriculture, and government leaders gave hope for stronger ties despite tariffs—cooperation agreements signed during the trip may boost Illinois' economy—although some GOP leaders criticized the visit.  WMBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Central College in East Peoria announced a transfer partnership with Millikin University in Decatur that will allow eligible ICC graduates to be automatically accepted into Millikin’s bachelor programs for the 2025-26 school year — students must complete an Associate’s degree in Arts, Science, Fine Arts, Engineering Science, or Applied Science with a 2.0 GPA, and honors students join the James Millikin Honors Scholar Program. The agreement also offers reduced tuition and full financial aid support through the Big Blue Pledge for full-time undergraduates.  WMBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois nursing home officials urged lawmakers to raise Medicaid rates because outdated 2017 costs have forced facilities to close, including a major operator filing for bankruptcy last year. The bipartisan legislation (sponsored by Sen. Dave Koehler and Rep. Bob Rita) would update the support services payment using funds from the nursing home bed tax over nine years.  WMBD
  • On Tuesday night, the City of Peoria approved a $625,000 settlement with Cleve Heidelberg’s estate to avoid a trial that could cost taxpayers millions. Heidelberg spent 47 years in prison after his 1970 conviction for the shooting death of a sheriff’s deputy — council members had mixed views on the deal — ending decades of litigation.  Peoria Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Advocates for organ donation honored last year's donors with a flag raising ceremony at Carle Health Methodist Hospital Tuesday. Chief Nursing Officer Jill Dodaro said the hospital recorded seven organ donors who provided eight organs in 2024 — and the system had 27 tissue donors from Peoria and Pekin.  WCBU
