COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect near the Metro Centre, 4700 N. University Street from 7:40 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 for the Susan G. Komen Peoria More Than Pink Walk — drivers are advised to use alternate routes like W. Northmoor Road and plan for extra travel time.  City of Peoria
  • Sunny Hostin, a co-host on The View and Emmy-winning journalist, will deliver the keynote address at the 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Luncheon in Peoria on Monday, Jan. 19 at the Peoria Civic Center Ballroom. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the luncheon will start at noon (tickets cost $65 per person or $650 per table).  25 News Now
  • Wildlife Prairie Park in Hanna City will begin a nearly year-long $1.5 million renovation that will add a new RV campground with 40 sites and a swimming beach along with upgrades to its event venue—adding a kitchenette, bathrooms, showers, and a laundry room—pending a May 8 vote on a special-use permit; renovations will open to guests by March 2026.  Peoria Journal Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pot on the stove caused a fire Monday morning at Brandywine Crossing in Peoria — firefighters responded shortly after 6:45 a.m., found smoke odor and active flames, evacuated residents, and treated one person while damage was estimated at $5,000.  WMBD
  • State Police responded at 12:20 p.m. Saturday to a motorcycle crash on I-74 and University Street in Peoria—where the rider lost control after the motorcycle’s power shut off and was taken to a local hospital.  25 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Peoria startup ShotHawk LLC is developing an autonomous threat unit called ShotHawk Spot that uses AI to detect and spray assailants with pepper gel. The company is testing the product with Bradley University and the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition and plans to install units at local businesses and schools by March 2026 — additional deployments are underway.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Peoria Police reported a 30% drop in shootings and a 32% decrease in gunshot victims from January 1 to April 30 compared to last year (14 shootings and 15 victims versus 20 shootings and 22 victims), as rounds fired fell from 1,654 to 1,099 and ShotSpotter alerts dropped by 24%, with two gunshot homicides recorded versus four last year.  25 News Now
  • A Peoria County judge found Daniel Pace, 42, guilty of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery after he set his girlfriend on fire with vodka and a lighter in 2022—she suffered burns to 30% of her body and he will be sentenced on July 9.  25 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Peoria were nearly unchanged on Monday, averaging $3.33 a gallon—up 0.4 cents from last week and 5.9 cents lower than a month ago, based on a survey of 148 stations by GasBuddy. Analysts said OPEC+ will boost oil production in June, which may raise gasoline supply as refinery maintenance wraps up.  WMBD
