  • Peoria’s farmers markets have opened for the summer season with nine local venues offering fresh fruits, vegetables and artisanal goods — each running on varied days and hours to fit busy schedules. Some markets feature live music and free coffee while others focus on a steady flow of local produce.  Pekin Daily Times
  • Peoria Park District is hosting its 12th Worldwide Day of Play today at Glen Oak Park with free family activities such as face painting, bounce houses, carnival games, obstacle courses, a career expo and the Clyde West Fishing Derby starting at 9 a.m. The event runs until 2 p.m.+ visitors also receive a $3 discount on admissions to the Zoo and PlayHouse Children’s Museum.  WCBU
  • Elite Community Outreach coordinated with the Peoria County Sheriff's Office on Friday at the county jail to bring seventh- and eighth-graders together with re-entry inmates who shared their personal accounts of crime and its consequences. Founder Carl Cannon said the event aimed to steer the youth away from criminal behavior—while also celebrating the progress made by the inmates in turning their lives around.  Peoria Journal Star

  • A Peoria man, 67-year-old Robert Romero, was arrested on charges of Indecent Solicitation of a Child, Grooming, and Distribution of Harmful Material to a Minor after a joint operation by Peoria Police and Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday—he is now held in Peoria County Jail.  WMBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Peoria County Board appointed George McKenna as the Regional Superintendent effective June 1, with Branden Martin named Treasurer on July 14 and Chad Jones chosen as Supervisor of Assessments on May 20—each filling roles vacated by retiring officials. McKenna, a 30-year education veteran, served as Assistant Superintendent since 2016 while Martin and Jones bring local business and assessment experience to their new positions.  WMBD
  • The city will begin slurry seal road projects on Tuesday, May 13 in all five council districts, with work expected to last about one week weather permitting—residents will be notified 24 to 48 hours in advance and must remove parked vehicles as driveway access may be limited for three hours.  City of Peoria

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Susan G. Komen Foundation is hosting its 40th annual More Than Pink Walk at Peoria’s Metro Centre starting at 8 a.m. today. The event raises funds for breast cancer research & support services and includes a Pathway of Hope featuring a river of pink to honor survivors, fighters, and those lost to the disease.  WMBD

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Home sales in Peoria were down 6 percent in the first quarter with 969 homes sold versus 1,031 last year—price-appropriate homes continued to get multiple offers and sell over asking price. The PAAR president said that rising inventory by 8 percent in April and higher average prices of over $173,000 point to a busier second quarter.  WMBD
