COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of Central Illinois is celebrating nearly 140 years in Peoria during National Salvation Army Week. The nonprofit helps local families by providing meals and support to veterans, children and families and is in Phase One of building a new men's shelter downtown — which will open in December.  WMBD

CRIME NEWS

  • Peoria Police arrested 61-year-old Anthony D. Barlow Saturday just before 7:15 p.m. when officers responded to a call near the intersection of E. Republic and N. Delaware streets after a gunshot was reported — Barlow faces charges for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card — and he was taken to Peoria County Jail.  25 News Now
  • A Decatur man was found guilty of First Degree Murder — also convicted of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon — after a three-day trial over the January 22 shooting at Casey’s on Farmington Road that killed Stashaun Wheeler, and he will be sentenced on July 3.  WMBD
  • Peoria Police are investigating an early Sunday morning rollover crash at the Western and Howett intersection, where a northbound vehicle swerved to avoid several cars and ran a red light before being struck—officers later responded to eight shots fired near Greenlawn and Lincoln, and the driver fled on foot.  WMBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Nate Bargatze broke records at the Peoria Civic Center Arena on May 10 by attracting more than 18,000 people in two shows and beating Elton John's record attendance of 11,766 from 1999 — he also set the record for the highest-grossing comedy show in the venue's 43-year history.  Pekin Daily Times
  • The TBM Avenger Reunion and Salute to Veterans is set for May 16-17 at Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru and will feature vintage warbirds and veteran honors in a two-day celebration of World War II history. The event will offer aerial displays, night shows, live music and fireworks with free parking and raffle tickets available—providing local residents a close look at these historic aircraft.  Pekin Daily Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Peoria dropped slightly last week with the average price per gallon falling to $3.31—2.3 cents lower than the previous week and 4.2 cents lower than a month ago. An expert said drivers might see small fluctuations as Memorial Day nears but do not expect major changes.  25 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peoria Public Schools board rejected a proposal to change the tuition discount for teachers’ children living outside the district from 45% to 100% after a split vote on Monday night (three for and four against), keeping the current rule since it has helped with teacher retention. The policy, which expires at the end of the 2024-25 school year, was not changed despite state law allowing districts more flexibility.  25 News Now
