COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peoria Fire Department kicks off its 4th annual Fill the Firetruck campaign, asking donors to bring new school supplies to any fire station. The drive partners with the Peoria Afro Firefighters Association, Peoria Park District and Peoria Firefighters Local 50 and will collect items for students from kindergarten to college until July 22, aiming to fill 1,200 backpacks.  25 News Now
  • Sidewalk work continues at several intersections along Jefferson Avenue and SW Adams Street as part of the conversion project, affecting crossings at Fayette, Main, Fulton Plaza, near the Civic Center, and at the northeast corner of SW Adams and N William Kumpf. Pedestrians and drivers are urged to use caution and follow posted parking restrictions+ extra measures will be announced as the project advances.  City of Peoria
  • This weekend, central Illinois will host five events— the Spring Bay Watermelon Festival at Legion Post 1115 runs June 5—7, the Tremont Turkey Festival in downtown Tremont runs June 6—8, Elmwood holds its Strawberry Festival on June 7 at Central Park, Chillicothe’s Party in the Park takes place on June 7 from 4 to 11 p.m., and Peoria Heights hosts the Sunday Funday Block Party and Pickleball Tournament on June 8.  Pekin Daily Times

  • Rich Pestein (74), owner of Peoria’s Bushwhacker for 50 years, is set to retire and is looking for someone to take over the store even if it changes its purpose. He said he may return with a lighter workload while he spends more time playing bridge and traveling.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A former neurosurgery resident in Peoria, Henry Chang, 30, was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to two felony counts of unauthorized videotaping in an employee bathroom at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center — where he secretly recorded over 50 employees.  WCBU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Peoria City Council approved Tuesday night the plans for a small shopping center at University Street and War Memorial Drive that will include a Dutch Bros Coffee shop and another drive-thru business — the council waived a traffic study despite concerns raised during the meeting.  WMBD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planet Fitness is launching its High School Summer Pass program to give free gym memberships for Illinois teens aged 14 to 19 from Sunday, June 1 until Sunday, Aug. 31. Parents must sign a waiver for those under 18, and participants may enter a contest to win a $10,000 scholarship by uploading a video on TikTok + tagging @planetfitness with the designated hashtags.  Pekin Daily Times

  • The Journal Star is asking Peoria-area fans to vote for their choice for high school softball player of the year with candidates from Washington, Metamora and Dunlap—voters see updated stats through May 27.
