BUSINESS NEWS

  • Peoria-based Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois will merge with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana to combine resources and expand service to 21 Illinois counties and 40 Indiana counties — a move that is expected to add about 180 jobs over the next three years. CEO Don Johnson will retire in August but plans to stay on as a consultant to help with the transition.  WMBD

CRIME NEWS

  • 12-year-old Jayden Norris was shot in West Peoria on June 4 at 6:09 p.m. and is now at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis with doctors expecting he will remain in the hospital for about a month — his family is urging local parents to watch their children to help prevent gun violence.  Peoria Journal Star
  • Christopher Cleary, 20, was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in a Central Peoria shooting where bullets struck two vehicles on June 7th and a home and another vehicle on June 9th last year—no one was injured.  WMBD

CULTURE NEWS

  • Peoria-born Bruce Johnston, 82, joined the Beach Boys in 1965 and won a Grammy Award for his songwriting; he still tours with the band and will perform at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on Sept. 5—his story began with a brief stay in a local home as a baby.  Pekin Daily Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Morton School Board changed Tammy Woodmancy's indefinite ban to a two-month ban—limiting her access to school property except for extracurricular activities until Aug. 12—after a two-hour closed-door hearing on Tuesday. The board said the new rule will end when the new school year starts.  WCBU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Strawberry Moon peaked at 2:44 a.m. CT yesterday and rose at 9:28 p.m. Wednesday in Peoria—its low arc from a major lunar standstill gave it a warm, orange tint—making it appear mostly full even after its peak.  Pekin Daily Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peoria City Council approved a $475,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to fund around 40 demolition projects in the 61603 and 61605 areas—an effort to remove unsafe, abandoned homes and clear the way for new housing. Community Development Director Joe Dulin noted the city has demolished 950 homes over the past decade, including 450 in the last three years.  WMBD
