COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, protesters gathered near Bradley University to oppose mass deportations and support immigrants’ rights during a peaceful rally led by local groups Peoria No Ban No Wall and River City Rainbow Collective—organizers said the protest was a stand for human rights. The rally followed widespread deportations in Los Angeles and protests in other cities, underlining concerns about ICE operations.  25 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Caterpillar raised its quarterly dividend by 7% to $1.51 per share; the dividend is payable on Aug. 20 to shareholders of record on July 21. The heavy equipment maker has increased dividends since 1933—continuing its long history and standing as Peoria’s second largest employer.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Peoria Police arrested 18-year-old Terrance J. Shaw Jr. around 5:25 p.m. Saturday on charges of first-degree murder, burglary to a business, and motor vehicle theft after he drove a stolen vehicle that crashed through the gates at Billie Jo’s Towing on West Lincoln Avenue and struck 70-year-old William Collier on June 9 — authorities also transferred 16-year-old Jalin Polnitz’s case to adult court after his arrest last Friday.  25 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Peoria NAACP hosted its second annual Ernestine Jackson Juneteenth Freedom Day Parade to honor a local civil rights activist and mark the 1865 moment when enslaved people were informed of their freedom — organizers noted the turnout was larger than in 2024, and the YANI Collective followed with a festival at John Gwinn Jr. Park. This event added to the many Juneteenth celebrations happening across Central Illinois.  WMBD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Peoria dropped 0.8 cents a gallon last week, averaging $3.27 today and marking a decrease of 2.1 cents from a month ago plus 29.7 cents from last year—GasBuddy data shows rising trends in nearby regions. Experts warn that national prices have risen and further hikes of 10 to 20 cents on gas plus 15 to 25 cents on diesel may come if international tensions continue.  WMBD
