ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 43-year-old man from Bartonville died after he reportedly laid down on the Union Pacific tracks near Kickapoo Creek Road and Harmon Highway, where a train struck him around 2:30 a.m. Monday — sheriff Chris Watkins said there was no sign of foul play — and the investigation is ongoing.  WMBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local hospitality veterans Josh Lanning and Ty Paluska launched the Greater Peoria Hospitality Initiative to help independent restaurants deal with rising costs and staffing issues— they plan to form a board with finance, legal, and industry experts and host invite-only events by the end of summer to strengthen the local food scene.  25 News Now
  • A Peoria millwork company, GEO J. Rothan Co., received a matching state grant of up to $50,000 from a program awarding $1.35 million to 29 manufacturers to support innovative work and local jobs—other recipients include Zarc International in Minonk and Tri C Company in Eureka.  25 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Juneteenth is coming on June 19, so most banks in Illinois will be closed because the Federal Reserve treats it as a bank holiday (the stock market and USPS will also be closed).  Pekin Daily Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Central College in East Peoria is watching federal proposals that would cut Pell grant funds and raise credit hour requirements (affecting many non-traditional students) while also monitoring changes in loan responsibility and state plans for four-year programs. The college is shortening courses to eight-week terms (80% completed by next fall) and has closed on-campus housing at WoodView Commons, partnering with other schools to provide summer options for over 300 students.  WCBU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peoria officials approved a list of consumer fireworks that can be sold and used, including party poppers, snappers, toy caps, snakes or glow worms, smoke generating devices, and sparklers—other fireworks like handheld devices, bottle rockets, and firecrackers are prohibited and will result in a $250 citation. This ordinance clarifies which novelty items may be used safely in the city.  City of Peoria
