COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peoria residents have many events to enjoy this weekend including community festivals in Chillicothe, Metamora and Princeville running from June 18th to 21st. An Eagles tribute concert will perform Saturday, June 21, on the riverfront—while the Pekin Park Concert Band will launch their summer season Sunday, June 22, in Mineral Springs Park in Pekin.  Pekin Daily Times

CRIME NEWS

  • The body of 73-year-old Edward DeArcos was found in a Penske truck in North Valley and has been identified by local officials—coroner Jamie Harwood noted no forensic evidence of injury, trauma, or foul play while toxicology tests are pending.  25 News Now
  • A resident admitted starting the fire at Sharon Healthcare The Woods assisted living facility for those with mental illness early Wednesday morning, and firefighters contained the blaze with functioning sprinklers—damages are estimated at $50,000 with no injuries reported.  25 News Now
  • A Peoria County judge on June 17 granted a petition to transfer a 15-year-old male charged with a February shooting that injured a 9-year-old boy to adult court for aggravated battery with a firearm — he is to remain in juvenile detention until trial.  Peoria County
  • A Peoria teenager was sentenced to 14 years in prison on June 18th for the 2023 murder of his mother after he strangled her during an argument and claimed self-defense—his charge was reduced to second-degree murder because of her history of abuse.  25 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Dream Center Peoria proposed a tiny shelter village similar to one planned in Bloomington at a special City Council meeting at the Gateway Building—meant to offer emergency shelter for those who do not thrive in traditional settings. During the meeting, Mayor Rita Ali and council members asked city staff to review possible sites and ordinance changes—aiming to avoid a downtown location that could hurt local growth.  WMBD
  • Peoria City Council announced that a miscalculation of soil and inflation have added over $200 million in costs to the city’s federally mandated sewer overflow projects, which forces a shift from green to gray infrastructure. The plan includes building five tanks along the riverfront and raising sewer rates in May 2027—costs that will affect households through the city's stormwater utility tax.  Peoria Journal Star
  • The boil order for Moss Avenue was lifted on Wednesday morning after testing confirmed the water met all federal and state standards—homes between MacArthur Highway and Western Avenue and those north can now use water as usual.  25 News Now
