- ➤ Peoria held the Ernestine Jackson Freedom Day Parade on Juneteenth to honor the late civil rights leader who worked to end discrimination in local government and community organizations. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ During a traffic stop on Tuesday near William Kumpf Boulevard and RB Garrett, Peoria Police arrested 19-year-old Kamarion Collins for charges including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, no FOID card, possession of a handgun under 21, possession of a stolen firearm and four active warrants + officers discovered a loaded gun with an extended magazine in his backpack. - ➤ A 19-year-old woman was arrested after an alleged armed robbery at Lexington Hills Apartments just before midnight on Sunday, police said, when she reportedly pulled a handgun on a vehicle buyer and fled the scene — a search of her home turned up a handgun with an extended magazine. WMBD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Peoria is planning to buy Expo Gardens—where the Heart of Illinois Fair is held—to develop 110 to 150 new homes on its 70-acre site, which is expected to add about $1.5 to $1.6 million in annual property tax revenue. The city council will vote on the purchase Tuesday—using a state grant for land and housing—while the deal will also clear roughly $457,000 in property liens. Peoria Journal Star
- ➤ Peoria residents are reminded that city buildings serve as cooling stations during extreme heat; the Police Department lobby at 600 SW Adams is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fire Department stations are available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.—users may need to leave a fire station if an active call occurs.
