  • Peoria Zoo said that Emy, a nearly 12 year old reticulated giraffe, is recovering well after surgery to remove her right eye because of a stubborn infection. The operation involved animal care staff and veterinary experts + she is now confidently navigating her barn and outdoor habitat with her longtime companion Vivian and new male companion Fitz.  25 News Now

  • SCORE Peoria is working to expand its small business mentorship program in Bloomington-Normal by recruiting local volunteers to help guide new entrepreneurs—efforts that face uncertainty as pending federal legislation may cut the national funding that supports the program.  WCBU

CRIME NEWS

  • Peoria Police say a man was killed in a shooting that led to a vehicle crash on MacArthur Highway early Friday morning near Martin Luther King Jr. Park — officers later reported a second vehicle occupant received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and are continuing their investigation.  WCBU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maxwell Road paving operations were postponed by rain on June 20 and will resume Monday, June 23 at 6:00 a.m.—the work will cover the stretch from Charleston to Fairview and the Charleston intersection.  Peoria County
  • City officials said mistakes in planning have raised the cost of fixing sewer overflows from early estimates to about $338 million—costs that will lead to higher sewer rates starting in 2027. Engineers are also studying a 6.4-million gallon stormwater tank project near the Cedar Street Bridge to help meet the consent decree requirements.  WCBU

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Public Health confirmed samples from Peoria and 16 other counties tested positive for West Nile virus this year, though no human cases have been reported yet. Officials advise local residents—especially those with weak immune systems—to use screens and insect repellents to lower their risk as mosquito season continues.  Pekin Daily Times
