- ➤ Peoria’s Don't Start Initiative held a friendly basketball tournament Saturday at RiverPlex — pairing kids with firefighters and school resource officers — to show them safe ways to win both on the court and in life. The event had speeches and songs — designed to counter violent music messages — that aimed to keep kids away from gangs, drugs and vaping. WMBD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria held its third Shine on Democracy event at the Universalist Unitarian Church where local experts explained how federal policies affect weather services, agriculture, and healthcare. The non-partisan event did not endorse any political candidates + a survey showed community interest in another session. WMBD
- ➤ Governor Pritzker said Illinois will work on lowering property taxes during a campaign stop in East Peoria and noted the state has one of the worst effective tax rates in the nation — a rate just behind New Jersey’s. State Rep. Gordon-Booth and City Manager Urich stressed that upcoming reform bills—set for Senate review this fall—aim to ease the tax load without cutting funding for schools and community services while local efforts to boost Peoria’s tax base continue. - ➤ The Peoria Fire Department is building a new Fire Station 16 on Northmoor Road after the old firehouse was demolished in February—costing $5 million and including community center rooms and 24-hour shift bedrooms. The station is expected to be completed in November to support effective response in the Northwest corridor. WMBD
