ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 30-year-old man from Peoria died when his SUV was hit by a truck-tractor on Interstate 74 near the Main Street exit Thursday morning—witnesses reported the truck’s tires broke off, causing his vehicle to derail and crash. WCBU
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 39-year-old man, Anthony Howland, was arrested in Peoria on July 2 for vehicular homicide by intoxication and vehicular assault related to a fatal Nashville crash in July 2024 that killed 53-year-old Kristie Garcia—his blood alcohol level was .18%—and he will be returned to Nashville to face charges. - ➤ The Peoria Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans for two murals to be placed on the Jefferson and 401 SW Water Street parking decks in Downtown Peoria. Big Picture Peoria selected local artists Bob Doucette and Chris LeCrone to create the pieces and the City Council will vote on final approval on July 22. Peoria Journal Star

- ➤ East Peoria is boosting security for the Red, White, and BOOM event today by placing concrete barriers and checkpoints around Riverfront Park—Bass Pro Drive will be closed with access through Riverside Drive and River Road—and officials remind visitors to keep coolers secure and avoid prohibited items. - ➤ The Village of Peoria Heights named a new police chief — veteran Chris Ahart — to lead the 17-person police department as he replaces retiring Chief Dustin Sutton, who will keep his role as village administrator. Ahart was unanimously approved by the village board on a four-year contract at an annual salary of $125,000 and said he will keep officers visible in the community. WCBU
- ➤ Residents in Peoria will have a free car seat check from 1-4 p.m. on August 6 at the Central Fire Station + trained technicians will verify each car seat's proper installation. City of East Peoria
- ➤ Peoria asked a county judge to fine MJ Illinois LLC over 2 million dollars for not fixing safety issues at the Riverview Plaza building—problems that surfaced after a water main break last February and a settlement reached in September. City Attorney Patrick Hayes said the owner did not begin the promised repairs on fire alarms and sprinklers and rejected a timeline that set work to be finished by March. WMBD

- ➤ Peoria City/County Health Department warned families to keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot during 4th of July cookouts, especially in the heat where bacteria can grow quickly — officials advise discarding foods left out for more than a couple of hours in 90 degree weather. Stephanie Streight added that staying hydrated and seeking shade is important, as young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems are most vulnerable. WMBD
