COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dream Center Peoria, a faith-based non-profit in downtown Peoria, is open 24 hours and will serve as a cooling center this week as heat indexes are expected to reach triple digits—offering rides, food, showers, and water to those in need.  25 News Now
  • Dream Center Peoria is preparing to give away 2000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students on Saturday—families are urged to arrive early since clear backpacks for middle and high schoolers will be available on a first-come basis. Elementary students will receive regular backpacks and a child must be present to receive a bag.  25 News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A family was displaced Tuesday night in Peoria’s East Bluff when a fire caused by electrical problems ignited a single bedroom; Fire Battalion Chief Josh Martin said one adult and three children escaped safely before crews arrived at 8:20 p.m., with damage estimated at about $50,000 and temporary housing arranged by the Red Cross (a family cat was rescued and given oxygen).  WMBD

CRIME NEWS

  • A South Peoria man, Drakar Munoz, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm at Parkwood Commons Apartment Complex in August 2023—he pulled a gun on a victim and shot him twice while his accomplice, Jimmy Williams, received eight years after pleading guilty.  WMBD
  • 23-year-old Quandarius Jones pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a racketeering offense and agreed to a plea deal that dropped a murder charge if he testifies against fellow Snakes gang members—sentencing is pending and he faces 8-18 years in prison.  WMBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city and MJ Illinois LLC reached a deal on the 20-story Riverview Plaza Building that will require $500,000 to be placed in an escrow account by Aug. 4 to pay for repairs to its fire alarm and suppression systems—city officials said they will review the work in 90 days and expect the repairs to be completed by winter.  Peoria Journal Star

  • Today, Morton High School in Morton hosts the 2025 Tri-County Tennis Tournament with eight singles divisions and a Tennis Fest — a two-hour event with food trucks and equipment demos ahead of the open championships. The tournament runs today through Sunday, July 27 and features detailed match schedules for men’s, women’s and recreational singles events.  Pekin Daily Times
  • Carolina Martinez, a Bradley sprinter and childhood cancer survivor who broke a 41-year record in the 300-meter dash during her freshman season, signed a NIL deal with Peoria-based Veloxity Labs—an agreement that ties her recovery and speed to support biotech research. She filmed two promotional videos on a local track and will use her platform to inspire others.  WCBU
