- ➤ East Peoria declared August Duck Race Month at a recent council meeting when Mayor John Kahl announced that the 37th annual duck race—an event to support the Center for Prevention of Abuse—will be held at Eastside Center on Aug 23 with festivities starting at 11 a.m. and the race beginning at 1 p.m. Peoria Journal Star

- ➤ A Pekin woman, Allison Salinas, 48, pleaded guilty to solicitation of murder on August 1+ was sentenced to 16 years in prison after reportedly asking a man from Texas to kill her husband. WMBD
- ➤ Police shot 41-year-old Brandon M. Lewis from North Atlantic Avenue Tuesday at about 5:15 p.m. near Northeast Glen Oak Avenue and Prospect Road after he allegedly hit an officer with a bat, and he died moments after his wound despite resuscitation attempts — Illinois State Police and the county attorney are investigating the case. - ➤ Dr. Mae Gilliland from ArtsPartners talked with Indo-American Society board member Krupal Sanghvi on Out and About — who said India Fest will take place on the Peoria Riverfront on Saturday, August 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. — where visitors can enjoy Indian cuisine, stage performances, henna art, boutique shopping, kids’ activities and a DJ dance party. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Work can now move forward to repair the Riverview Plaza building in downtown Peoria. City Manager Patrick Urich said MJ Illinois’s owner has placed $500,000 in escrow to fix the fire suppression system—work scheduled to be completed by February 2026 after the building closed last February due to a water main break. - ➤ On August 6, East Peoria City Council approved over $300,000 in water treatment expenses required by IEPA—commissioner Mike Sutherland voiced his concerns about the high costs, and the council also approved agreements with IDOT for repairing the Cedar Street bridge and upgrading traffic signals while voting down a solar installation request at Cross Point Church.
