- ➤ Local and state proclamations celebrated Annie Malone's 159th birthday Saturday at the main branch of the Peoria Public Library. Born in Metropolis and a graduate of Peoria High School, Malone became one of the nation's first black female millionaires and founded a cosmetology school that eventually employed 75,000 people — her great-grand-nephew said her legacy should be honored separately from Madam CJ Walker. - ➤ East Peoria firefighters responded Sunday evening to a home on E. Faulkner Road after residents attempted to control a fire with a garden hose; two people were taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation—damage to the home is estimated at $25,000. WMBD

- ➤ On August 7, officers responded to a shooting in West Bluff where a man suffered a gunshot wound, and his brother, 23-year-old Ashwin J. Greenleaf, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm after allegedly firing two shots inside a residence; he remained in custody pending trial as police continued to investigate the incident. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in Peoria dropped less than a penny a gallon over the last week—averaging $3.30 on Monday, which is 3.8 cents lower than a month ago and 43 cents lower than last year according to GasBuddy. WMBD

- ➤ Today, Moss Avenue is closed from Western Avenue to Duryea Place for the reconstruction of the Institute Place intersection with detour routes via Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Bradley Avenue, University Street, Richard Allen Drive and Romeo B. Garrett Avenue — the closure is expected to last until Saturday, Aug.16. Highway officials also began resurfacing and sidewalk improvements on Glasford Road from Main Street to Route 24 through September and closed eastbound Wilhelm Road from Country Ridge Lane to Hunters Trail Court at 7 a.m. today for the Wilhelm Bridge Channel Stabilization Project — traffic now uses a shared center turn lane until early fall. - ➤ On Saturday, the Run, Walk or Trot 2 Stop Blood Clots event took place in Peoria to honor Eagle Scout Deveraux Hubbard II, who died from a blood clot at age 19 in 2013. Organizers from the Deveraux Hubbard II Foundation said staying active and drinking water helps lower blood clot risks—similar events were held in Michigan, Arizona and other areas. WMBD
