Good morning, Peoria. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 26th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 100 local men gathered Monday morning at Peoria Manual High School to support students after a pair of shooting incidents near the school last week. Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria organized the rally to boost community strength—he hopes similar support can protect students at other schools.  WMBD
  • Denise Moore resigned as CEO of the Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity four months after she took over because she said the board focused on daily tasks + ignored expert advice, worsening the nonprofit’s financial troubles after the loss of a major state grant. Her departure comes amid ongoing leadership turnover that has left the organization struggling to meet its mission.  Peoria Journal Star
  • The City of Peoria announced it will open a time capsule from 1897 that was removed during recent façade repairs. The public is invited to view the capsule at City Hall until the unveiling at the Gateway Building on November 2 at 2 p.m.—and locals are encouraged to join in preserving our history.  City of Peoria

  • Peoria police fatally shot 41-year-old Brandon Lewis on Aug. 5 after he swung a wooden bat at officers—his mother said he had mental illness and that the police should have helped him rather than shoot him.  Peoria Journal Star
  • Police charged a 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy with weapons offenses after a South Peoria shooting early Sunday that injured two people—one critically with a gunshot wound to the head—as 19 shots were fired and officers recovered a vehicle with bullet holes and a broken window while locating the suspects hiding nearby.  WMBD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Peoria gas prices dropped by 1.5 cents in the last week to $3.29 a gallon on Monday—storms knocked out a Midwest refinery in Indiana, and GasBuddy reported prices are 0.3 cents higher than last month and 37.4 cents lower than last year.  WMBD
