- ➤ A Peoria grand jury indicted Rico C. Booker on a first-degree murder charge for the fatal shooting of Rivian worker Roy L. Payne in South Peoria in 2023—his arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 28. 25 News Now
- ➤ A 15-year-old boy was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm after allegedly firing multiple rounds at Manual High School Friday afternoon—police recovered a loaded handgun and no one was injured. 25 News Now

- ➤ The city of Peoria and Big Picture Peoria will dedicate a new mural titled 'Play Greater' on the Jefferson Parking deck on Friday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m.—at Distillery Labs located at 201 SW Adams Street in downtown Peoria. Community leaders including Mayor Rita Ali, Mark Misselhorn, Brian Ray, Mark Roberts, and Laura Cullinan will speak at the event. City of Peoria
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Peoria Public Schools Board chose a Texas-based firm—From the Heart of Arlington—to search for a new superintendent that will replace retiring Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat when her contract expires at the end of the school year. The board voted 4 to 3 on Monday night, selecting the firm over others such as BYP Associates and the Illinois Association of School Boards. WMBD

- ➤ Denise Moore, the CEO of the Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity, stepped down citing family concerns and board dysfunction—she said the board defunded the agency’s LIHEAP and CSBG grants and left fiscal challenges unresolved.
