COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Male role models gathered just before 7 a.m. Thursday at Peoria Central High School to form a safe passage for students amid rising youth violence. Organizer Jeremy Sargent said the group will meet weekly throughout the school year—continuing efforts sparked by Police Chief Eric Echevarria's call for visible community support.  25 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport set a record with 80,836 passengers in July, a 26% increase from last year due to added flights and rising travel demand. The airport will see more than 14,000 travelers over Labor Day weekend as airlines fill extra seats.  WCBU
  • Landmark Lanes in Peoria announced it will close on September 23rd—after nearly 46 years of serving the community—due to a pending property sale, while UFitness in Landmark Recreation remains open. The business thanked customers for their loyalty over the years.  25 News Now
  • Peoria International Airport recorded 80,836 passengers in July—an increase of 26% from last year—and the airport is preparing for a busy Labor Day weekend with over 14,000 travelers expected. This milestone shows the strength of its travel market and sets the stage for more growth by year’s end.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Peoria County prosecutors filed a petition to detain 21-year-old Kayana Polk after she allegedly ran over her boyfriend with a car in East Bluff late Tuesday, causing him to suffer a broken pelvis that required surgery—Polk admitted to hitting him before fleeing and police later took her into custody with her pre-trial detention hearing scheduled for today.  WMBD
  • A man was shot Wednesday night in East Bluff when 12 shots were fired at the intersection of Virginia and Atlantic—Peoria Police said a 22-year-old was found with a gunshot wound to his leg in front of a nearby residence and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no suspects have been named.  WMBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peoria city leaders pressed Ameren Illinois over rising summer electricity bills during an hour-long city council meeting — the company explained that shifting away from old fossil fuel plants and increased online demand are pushing costs up, while some council members warned that high bills especially hurt low-income residents.  WCBU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Peoria Rivermen leader Bart Rogers will be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in the Builders category this season—making him the second owner honored after Bruce Saurs; he served as President and COO from 2004 until the team’s sale and returned in 2013 to lead the team to multiple titles.  WMBD
