ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Peoria firefighters responded to a residential fire on Sunday afternoon on W. St. James—where grease ignited on a stove top caused flames to spread to walls, cabinets, and the ceiling—arriving just before 3 p.m. to rescue three dogs and two cats while one cat remains missing, with no injuries reported, $60,000 in damage, and a displaced resident.  WMBD

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Peoria manufacturer NFW announced that its board has voted to wind down operations after years of struggles — the company once employed nearly 300 people and faced several rounds of layoffs. Its CEO said the board is exploring all options for an orderly shutdown as challenges in the market continue.  Pekin Daily Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies in West Peoria responded at 5:00 a.m. Monday after shots were fired at a vehicle near Callender and Western Avenue; a witness reported the suspect—a heavy set man in a gray hooded sweatshirt with chin-length dreads—was seen earlier in the area while investigators found two casings along the sidewalk near Cedar and Ayres with no injuries reported and no camera footage or witnesses yet identified.  WMBD
  • On September 7 at about 10:48 a.m., Peoria police responded to reports of an argument and gunshots on the 3000 block of W. Ann when a woman said 24-year-old Raymond L. Miller fired two rounds and fled with her car—officers later found his vehicle on Route 9 in Bartonville, located a weapon, and arrested him, with no injuries reported.  City of Peoria

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Peoria dropped slightly last week as GasBuddy reported a 0.9-cent decrease to $3.35 per gallon on Monday—analysts say the shift to winter gasoline later this month may keep prices falling.  WMBD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News and World Report released its university rankings and highlighted Illinois schools like Northwestern University and University of Chicago based on graduation rates, research output and funding. The list may help students choose a college as the new school year begins—offering insight into each school’s performance.  Pekin Daily Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peoria City Council will vote tonight on accepting an $11 million donation from the Hengst Foundation to build the Dee Hengst Amphitheater in Riverfront Park near the Peoria RiverPlex. Construction will begin 90 days after final approval and will take 12 to 18 months— the city will hire a private firm and pay $1 per ticket sold in semi-annual payments.  Peoria Journal Star
