COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two hundred local bikers set off Thursday morning from Walter Brothers Harley-Davidson on the 19th annual St. Jude ride, beginning a 450-mile journey that includes a stop in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Riders—some of whom are former patients and family members—will finish in Memphis and at St. Jude Hospital today at 11:30 a.m. as they aim to raise $1.5 million and beat last year's total of $1.3 million.  25 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the Peoria Chamber of Commerce said a new junk removal business called Two Men and a Junk Truck held a ribbon cutting and created ten new jobs to help residents clear out old appliances and clutter. Co-owner Jen Christensen said the service will help remove items from attics and storage areas — making it a lasting part of Peoria County and nearby areas.  25 News Now

  • After conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, Peoria psychologist Dr. Barbara Toohill of Antioch Group said politically charged social media posts have weighed heavily on friends and urged people to set aside blame and focus on mental health—she recommended putting phones down and speaking directly with loved ones.  WMBD

  • Peoria Riverfront Museum unveiled a new 9/11 exhibit on September 11 that marked the 24th anniversary of the attack and honored victims like Peoria native Charles Chan who died in the North Tower. Former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card recalled alerting President Bush that the nation was under attack — a memory the museum plans to preserve for future generations.  25 News Now

  • On Wednesday, Bradley University opened its updated Williams Dining Hall in a ribbon-cutting ceremony that featured Bradley alum and renowned chef Jeff Mauro — the hall now offers more seating and new food stations for plant-based and allergen-conscious meals.  WMBD
  • Tremont District 702 superintendent Sean Berry said that school officials and police found no credible threat to school safety after investigating rumors emailed to parents—he added that the district’s strong threat assessment process remains in place and urged students to report any unusual activity. His statement aimed to reassure families and ease student concerns amid national news of school safety incidents.  WMBD
  • At Charter Oak Primary School in Peoria, second grade teacher Jessica Fryman taught her students about the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by reading a book about resilience—This Very Tree, A Story of 9/11, Resilience and Growth. The lesson helped the students learn that tough times can be overcome and they must keep trying when challenges arise.  25 News Now

  • Women recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer may have a new treatment option at OSF Healthcare Cancer Institute (accepting five patients into its first clinical trial today) and a second trial (for those with recurring cases) will start later in 2025.  25 News Now
  • A new report from Trace One using CDC data found that Illinois recorded 94 foodborne outbreaks from 2021 to 2023 — the third highest after California and Ohio — even though its outbreak rate ranked 15th among states. The report noted a 36% drop in total outbreaks paired with a slight rise in illness rates.  Pekin Daily Times
  • Dr. Barbara Toohill of the Antioch Group in Peoria said coping with national tragedies starts with understanding your feelings and talking with someone trusted—like a pastor, counselor or therapist. She added that seeking help early can prevent distress from growing stronger.  25 News Now

  • Peoria will host the 37th annual First to the Finish Invitational cross country meet at Detweiller Park this Saturday—5,507 runners from 221 schools will race on a historic 3-mile course with top teams like Peoria Notre Dame expected to compete.
