- ➤ Costco warns customers who purchased Kirkland brand Prosecco to throw out unopened bottles immediately due to a risk of shattering—items sold in Illinois between April 25 and Aug. 26 must be disposed of by wrapping them in paper towels and placing them in a plastic bag; buyers can get a full refund by returning the mailed product notice. - ➤ A power outage caused a soft lockdown at Peoria Richwoods High School on Tuesday afternoon when school officials limited student movement to keep everyone safe—power was restored just after 2:15 p.m. and dismissal occurred at 2:30 p.m. WMBD
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Peoria County will invest between $22 million and $31 million to update its decades-old jail—repairing its kitchen, HVAC, and plumbing and adding a potential mental health unit—and keep it operational for up to 20 years to delay the need for a new $200 million facility. WCBU
- ➤ Peoria’s Department of Public Works will host an open house on Sept. 24 at GAR Hall, 416 Hamilton Blvd from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.—attendees can review the draft Bike Master Plan and see a pop-up biking improvement display with light refreshments. City of Peoria
- ➤ Peoria installed 300 new downtown parking meters in August to let drivers pay with coins or via text using credit cards, Google Pay, or Apple Pay — the update has allowed the parking crew to enforce rules more effectively. Drivers must pay between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and receive a 10-minute grace period before a $20 ticket is given. 25 News Now
- ➤ Peoria Police Department held a luncheon Tuesday to honor its Co-Responder Pilot program, which teams police with mental health experts and social workers to help people in crisis and relocate domestic violence victims. - ➤ Peoria Heights village trustees will hold a vote on October 7 to override Mayor Wigginton’s veto of a 1% local grocery tax that was passed on a 5–1 vote to replace an expiring state tax generating at least $125,000 a year—this override needs a two-thirds majority to take effect.
