- ➤ Peoria County Animal Protection Services cares for nearly 200 animals and is waiving adoption fees from Sept. 22 through Sept. 27—adoptions are offered on a first-come, first-served basis during viewing hours from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and adopters are reminded to plan for the ongoing costs of pet care. - ➤ Friday, the Salvation Army broke ground on a new 19,000-square-foot men's shelter at its campus on Bryan Street and Jefferson Avenue that will nearly double its capacity, provide job training, life skills workshops and support services, and keep the current shelter open during construction. The project also includes renovating an administrative building into a family services and veteran's center and will be completed by the end of 2026 or early 2027—backed by a $30 million investment. - ➤ Caterpillar CEO Joe Creed said at the centennial celebration in Edwards on Friday that Peoria remains the company’s home because of his strong central Illinois ties. The company, which still employs over 12,000 workers, held a show featuring 126 machines that moved over 17,000 tons of gravel—donating $261,000 to three local charities. Pekin Daily Times

- ➤ Peoria Promise has expanded its tuition reimbursement program to include Peoria Heights students, covering 50 to 100% of tuition costs for those attending ICC. The non-profit, which has provided over $7 million in aid over 18 years, will visit Peoria Heights High School to help eligible students apply—applications open February 1. WMBD

- ➤ Metamora won 43-40 on Friday at Carper Field when senior Jaiduan Cranford rushed for 276 yards and scored 4 touchdowns to lift the Redbirds. The team built a 43-point second quarter — when both sides piled on scores — and stayed in the hunt for the Mid-Illini Conference title. Pekin Daily Times
