  • City Hall became a drop-off site for the Salvation Army’s Coats4Kids drive on October 29 — accepting new or gently used scarves, gloves, boots, hats, and coats of all sizes at City Hall on 401 W Washington St and Potbelly Sandwich Shop on 318 W Washington St to help keep East Peoria warm this winter.  City of East Peoria
  • The Peoria Humane Society is offering pet food, discounted spay and neuter services, and pet supplies to help local pet owners struggling with the ongoing government shutdown today—Officials warn that continued financial hardships may force some owners to consider surrendering their pets.  25 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Peoria Public Library will get a $10,000 gift from the Carnegie Corporation as part of a program celebrating America's 250th anniversary next year. Executive Director Randall Yelverton said the funds will be used to support new services for the community.  WCBU
  • A new record store called Q-Tones Music opened at Northwoods Mall, offering both new and vintage vinyl along with a station for customers to listen to records and a small venue for local artists. Owner Quentin Scherr plans to host weekly open mic events (the next set for November 22) to boost the mall’s energy.  25 News Now
  • Peoria Symphony Orchestra will perform a Baroque concert called Handel at the Cathedral on November 14 and 15 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Maestro George Stelluto said the show will include unique instruments such as the lute and theorbo (a rare instrument with a nearly five-foot neck).  WCBU

  • More than one million Illinois residents will lose SNAP benefits on November 1 due to a government shutdown nearing its five-week mark — the funding lapse poses a food access challenge ahead of the Thanksgiving period. SNAP recipients are advised to seek help from local food banks or state agencies if their benefits end.  Pekin Daily Times

  • A Michigan candy manufacturer is recalling one lot each of its Peanut Butter Crush and Ca$hew Cow full-size bars for undeclared allergens caused by a temporary packaging error—only bars sent to Michigan and New York are affected—while Illinois trick-or-treaters face no risk.  Pekin Daily Times
