  • During the government shutdown, central Illinois food pantries reported record need and donations—Peoria’s Sophia’s Kitchen fed up to 600 people daily while Pekin’s Hope Chest saw twice its usual visitors—as community leaders warn that donations may drop when SNAP benefits are reduced.  25 News Now
  • Northwoods Mall in Peoria is drawing more shoppers as Gen Z customers boost attendance by 15 to 20 percent compared to last year — with about 69,000 visitors a month. Mall officials say that the revived social experience after the pandemic is helping drive a steady recovery of in-person shopping.  25 News Now
  • Peoria Friendship House will expand its turkey giveaway from 250 to 300 for Thanksgiving as local food pantries face high demand despite growing community support — the meals will be distributed on the Sunday before the holiday from 1-3 p.m., and a ham giveaway is planned the week before Christmas.  WMBD

  • Buckle Inc. has reopened its Peoria store at Glen Hollow Shopping Center after moving from Northwoods Mall. The company announced the move on Thursday and offers a gift card contest through Nov. 25 with more than 200 fashion brands in the store and online.  Peoria Journal Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Advance Illinois (a bipartisan education group) visited Illinois Central College (in Peoria) on Wednesday to discuss its report 'The State We’re In' that revealed an $8.9 billion gap in early childhood funding and rising mental health issues among students. The report also noted that Peoria Public Schools are improving graduation rates, reading scores, and reducing chronic absenteeism.  25 News Now
  • Bradley University is planning to build a new decorative gateway next fall at the corner of Main and University as part of campus upgrades — when the project begins in the spring, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute building will be demolished and its events moved to Westlake Hall. University president James Shadid says the change will boost campus recognition and support further development.  25 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown Peoria drivers should expect delays as construction continues through the holidays near the County Court House, with crews working on Main Street and Jefferson Avenue. City workers have been converting Adams and Jefferson to two-way roads for almost two years—Public Works spokesman Nick McMillion said the project is expected to finish by early summer.  25 News Now

  • Jason Christie, the former Peoria Rivermen playoff hero and longtime head coach, will be inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame on January 19 at the Courtyard by Marriott Dallas/Allen Event Center—an honor that marks his record-setting career and deep ties to local hockey. Christie, whose leadership helped launch a golden era in Peoria, now pursues a role as an NHL scout.  Pekin Daily Times
  • Tremont High School's girls' volleyball team earned a spot in the IHSA Class 1A State Semifinals with a three-set win over Hartsburg-Emden and will play Cissna Park today at 10:30 a.m. at CEFCU Arena in Normal (head coach Tiffany Klaus said the team showed great talent and had strong town support) (they finished the round with a 23-17 record).  WMBD
