COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peoria hosts several community events this weekend including a reggae-rock concert at CEFCU Center Stage Friday at 7 p.m.—featuring Roots of Creation and Still Shine—and the SC415 street race in downtown on Saturday. Additional activities include Limestone Township Pool Days in Bartonville, a free birthday celebration at Peoria PlayHouse Children's Museum, and a Juneteenth Festival with live entertainment at John H. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In May, 18-year-old Dunlap High School senior Nevaeh Mitchell was killed in a head-on collision on N. Orange Prairie Road—her family later reached a $300,000 out-of-court settlement with driver Levi Dietz, who pled guilty and received community service and a fine.  WMBD

CRIME NEWS

  • A 70-year-old Bartonville man, William Collier, died when a stolen car hit him near Billie Jo’s Towing in Peoria on Monday—he suffered severe head injuries and no arrests have been made—as police and the coroner continue their investigation.  WMBD
  • On Wednesday night, firefighters responded to a residential fire on Homestead Avenue near NE Brevis Street after smoke and flames were seen coming from a first-floor window in an empty home where arson is suspected — crews quickly brought the fire under control within ten minutes, causing about $5,000 in damage with no injuries.  WMBD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Stacker used Bureau of Labor Statistics data to rank science jobs in Peoria by their median annual wages as of May 2024. Chemists (120 positions) earned the highest pay at $122,950 while other roles like school psychologists and chemical technicians have lower wages and fewer openings.  25 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tazewell County said its 911 center is down and all emergency calls are being rerouted to Peoria County — officials expect a fix this afternoon.  WMBD
  • Peoria City Council approved joining the Illinois River Cities and Towns Initiative with a vote of 9 to 2 and an annual cost of $22,000, sparking talks of replacing the Spirit of Peoria with a cruise stop on the Illinois River. Regional leaders discussed a possible route linking Chicago, Ottawa and local cities—steps that could boost river tourism, though no firm plans have been set.  WCBU

SPORTS NEWS

  • During the 2024-25 school year, the Illinois High School Association set a pay scale for postseason sports that starts with $76.50 for baseball and softball regionals and increases to $340 for state finals, while football officials earn $90 in the opening round and up to $200 at the championship. The baseline fee, established on July 1, 2024, guides payments for basketball, volleyball, soccer, wrestling, and track officials—each sport earning fees based on game rounds.  Pekin Daily Times
