  • The 36th Greater Peoria Honor Flight landed in Washington D.C. before 10 a.m. EDT—carrying 71 veterans and their loved ones who will visit seven stops including the new Vietnam Women’s Memorial, with four veterans being women.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Revenue warned taxpayers about a text message scam that claims a tax refund has been processed and urges recipients to verify personal banking details—Peoria residents are advised to ignore these texts and check refund information only through official channels.  Pekin Daily Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Princeville High School is the only high school in Illinois competing in T-Mobile's Friday Night 5G Lights contest and has already received $30,000 as part of its bid to win a $1-million prize that will fund a stadium renovation, with public votes closing on October 24 and the winner to be announced on October 30.  WMBD
  • Dunlap Community Unit School District 323 got a permit to build a new two-story elementary school in a residential district on North Pacific that will replace Wilder-Waite Elementary—backed by up to $44 million in bonds. The new building will offer over 80,000 square feet to serve up to 740 students as enrollment is expected to grow from 4,800 to about 5,100 in the next ten years.  WMBD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The East Peoria City Council voted on Tuesday to approve the first reading of an ordinance that will ban the sale, possession, and use of kratom and its byproduct 7-OH amid health concerns—violators will face fines from $350 to $750. The proposed law will be on public inspection for at least one week before any further action is taken.  Peoria Journal Star
  • City staff reported on Tuesday night that Peoria’s plan to add a passenger rail line to Chicago will cost more than estimated as spending for step two rises from $4 million to about $6.4 million. Federal funds will cover 90% of the cost—local partners must pay the rest—while the project moves into a 30-month phase for clearances and engineering work.  Peoria Journal Star
  • Peoria County released its 2026 recommended budget that is available online for review & planning. The budget will guide the county’s spending in the coming year.  Peoria County

  • Today, the Illinois High School Association released its 2025 playoff outlook ahead of Week 7 with 46 unbeaten football teams in eight classes, including local Peoria-area schools.   • The Journal Star named its nominees for the girls athlete of the week for Sept. 29—Oct. 4, featuring standout players from Limestone, Notre Dame and Illinois Valley Central.
